Breaking Through Gender Barriers with Jamie Yocono

November 15, 2017 in Episodes

Meet Jamie

Jamie Yocono, owner of Wood It Is!, knew exactly what she wanted to do at a very young age. As soon as she sought out the education she desired, she was immediately met with resistance.

“You can’t. Girls can’t take woodshop.”

This isn’t the only time she was met with similar resistance.

Rather than turning her back on her passion, Jamie stayed persistent. She tapped into the strong work ethic that was instilled in her by her family and continued to show up to classes, her carpentry apprenticeship, and job sites. She focused on quality and continued to hone her skills. Advocates appeared along the way as she quietly earned the respect of her peers. Eventually, she moved to Las Vegas where she was able to make a living doing what she loved.

On most days, you can find Jamie in her shop where she teaches woodworking classes and builds custom furniture for her clients. She recently appeared on the television show, Handcrafted America, and is an active member of the Sin City Woodworkers community.
